The General Assembly of the Turkish Parliament endorsed Tuesday, March 31, a nuclear power plant agreement bill under which Japan will be authorized to build an energy plant in the western Turkish province of Sinop.
On May 3, 2013, Turkey and Japan signed a $22 billion deal on Turkey's second nuclear plant project in the Black Sea province of Sinop.
According to the deal, a Japanese-French alliance led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and France's Areva will build the plant. The first unit of the plant is set to be active by 2013, while the last unit will be in operational by 2028. The Turkish public sector will also have the share in the nuclear plant. The share of the Turkish Electricity Generation Corporation, or EÜAŞ, will be 20-45 percent.
Turkey also planned to operate its third nuclear plant by using national sources, while the first plant in the southern province of Mersin will be built by Russian company Rosatom.
