When will the ISIL operation happen?

On the day we conducted the operation on the Tomb of Suleyman Shah, we also pressed the button for an operation against ISIL.

Americans are saying that one cannot conduct an operation with a flourish of trumpets; however, we can hear the footsteps of the air-supported land operation against ISIL.

I’d like to share the information I’ve acquired about the ISIL operation.

While investigating behind the scenes of the operation on the Tomb of Suleyman Shah, I was also pursuing the question “Had it been a precaution aimed at saving our soldiers’ lives or was it a precaution for the operation against ISIL?”

In those days, I couldn’t find a satisfactory reply. However, the recent developments are showing that we are getting closer to a big operation.

Then, when will this operation mobilize? How many soldiers will be deployed? What will be Turkey’s position in this operation?

Also, another question.

Will the PKK participate in this operation supported by Turkey?

I’d like to continue with the answers later in my article and now return back to the Tomb of Suleyman Shah operation.

Upon receiving information that a wide-scaled land maneuver will be conducted against ISIL, the officials were in the middle of being mobilized for the evacuation of the Tomb of Suleyman Shah.

If you remember, when ISIL steered from Syria to Iraq, the first thing they did was to take 49 of our citizens in the Mosul Embassy as hostages. The opposition party, who accused the rulership of not using caution in that period, is now, on the contrary, criticizing the rulership for taking precaution.

The preparation for this operation has been ongoing on for 2 months. It is being kept secret. In the Presidential Palace, the meetings take place in the “Deaf room”. It’s being conducted in the General Staff without the knowledge of many generals. The 6-month switch period of the 38 soldiers at the Tomb of Suleyman Shah expired on December. However, this switch was extended to 8 months in order not to startle people.

Officials are emphasizing that, as they did in the Mosul incident, ISIL will raid the Tomb of Suleyman Shah and take our soldiers as hostages as soon as they realize the operation. Eventually, they reach the “It's not just 100 percent certain this will happen; it’s 1500 percent”  result. Information in this direction and the intelligence analyses that support this information are being laid on the table. Great countries are the ones that have to take precautions for 2 years later, not 2 months later. Didn’t we experience this in Mosul?

Now, we had taken precaution in order to avoid being caught unprepared. Because, signs that the coalition powers’ preparations for “G-day” against ISIL are gradually increasing. On the day the “Train-Equip” agreement had been done, the operation’s button had been hit. This also is not independent from the above statement.

Another indicator, that an operation against ISIL is nearing, had happened yesterday as two of our military transportation crafts carried military aid to Baghdad. Also today, Minister of Defense İsmet Yılmaz will be making contacts in Baghdad.

Now, I’d like to bring you back to the days that led up to the March 1st Memorandum.

It was the middle of February. As the Yeni Şafak group, we visited Prime Minister Abdullah Gül. On that same day, we also visited Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the AK Party Headquarters, and, Bülent Arınç  at the TBMM (Grand National Assembly of Turkey).

While indicating that Prime Minister Gül is having an important phone call, they led us to the side room, which had been prepared during Ecevit’s period for him to rest.

Afterwards, the Prime Minister came to our room. His phone call was with the Deputy President of US, Dick Cheney. He only stated that Americans are persistent for this to pass this memorandum. The Turkish media has been separated into two. One group was defending that the US will not dare enter such an operation.

I drew near to Mr. Abdullah and asked him about this possibility. He was speaking off the record. “No. They’ll definitely make an intervention.” This was crucial information for me. Besides, some writers, who are known for their intimacy with Gül, were defending the “If Turkey doesn’t support it, ABD will not dare such an operation” opinion. Gül wasn’t of the same opinion. He was one of the names who knew that the US had been determined in the intervention. At that time, I had asked, “Then, when will it happen. Should we expect it to happen in the near future?” At that moment, his eyes were fixed on Ecevit’s famous typewriter. However, I was waiting for his reply with the worry that they might ask us to leave soon.

He replied, “We have examined the military uniforms that Americans brought. These uniforms are not durable to the desert heat”. After pondering on it for a while, he said; “We expect them to interfere in the middle of March at the latest”. This was even more crucial information. However, he also stated this off the record. On March 20th, the US entered Iraq.

Yesterday, while asking my sources about the operation, by being reminded of the military uniforms we’ve sent to the Iraqi army, I also asked them, “Those are desert uniforms… I wonder, will the operation be conducted in the summer?” Even though their names are “desert uniforms”, they stated that those military uniforms are produced especially according to the winter conditions.

As of April, we are expecting a great land operation against ISIL, including 20,000 – 25,000 soldiers. Coalition forces will be supporting this operation from above with fighter aircrafts and missiles.

The Iraqi army and Peshmerga will be in the land operation. Our Special Forces’ lieutenants had been training the Peshmerga fighters for around 2 years. Then, what will PKK do? According to my observations, PKK desires to participate in the land operation against ISIL. Will this be possible? I didn’t get the impression that Turkey will be a blockage. The operation will be conducted from the North of Kirkuk towards Mosul. After all, both side’s forces are exchanging fire at Tikrit, Saddam’s birthplace and ISIL’s strongest resistance point.

What will be our position in this operation against ISIL? We won’t be participating in the land operation. We will be giving logistical and military equipment support. Our bases will not be used centrally; however, if it’s needed, fighter airplanes will be landing at the İncirlik Base. Our fighter airplanes will not be participating in the air operation. “Awacs”, early-warning planes, will be giving communication support.

We are not included in the operation against ISIL; however, we will be included in the coalition by giving logistical support.
